Q1: What has been your main inspiration in media?
A1: Reporting on people and stories that would not otherwise be represented in the media, and utilising my identity and understanding of diverse cultures to give a voice to those that would not otherwise speak up. I don’t think I’m inspired by any one person, but I’m always amazed by the effort colleagues at Sky News go to to get a story.
Q2: Who was your childhood media hero?
A2: I was always in awe of politicians - those with the ability to make and win arguments in public and speak up for what they believed in. Margaret Thatcher and John Major (as Prime Ministers) were always most memorable.
Q3: What has been your most exciting time in media so far in your career? A3: There have been many - it’s a cliché but no two days are ever the same. I’ve been lucky to have had many fantastic experiences as a journalist - from working at a radio station in New York to following the 9/11 Commission for a think-tank in Washington D.C.
My first television report for ITV Central was exciting - as was touring my first documentary “Turbanology: After 7/7” in the States and screening my historic short film “Sikhs@War” at the Houses of Parliament.
More recently, being sent to Birmingham to work on Sky’s coverage of the tragic deaths of three Muslim men during the week of riots was memorable. Being from Birmingham and having strong local connections meant I was able to get access to people and insights others didn’t.
Q4: If you could do any job in media, what would it be?
A4: I’ve always wanted to report/present programmes on British and American politics.
Q5: If you didn't get into media what career would of you been in today?
A5: I’ve always been attracted to politics - so that or a military career.
