Almeena is a news reporter for ITV Wales News. She was formerly a BBC News Trainee but recently left ITN as a producer to start reporting for ITV Wales.

What has been your main inspiration in media?

My first memory of a major news event was seeing a newsflash with Michael Buerk in 1988 about the Lockerbie disaster. I was nine years old and can remember being glued to the television set and the shocking images of the plane wreckage – the powerful footage left me wanting to know more about the world.

Who was your childhood media hero?

Kate Adie and Jon Snow inspired me the most. I admire Kate Adie’s poise and courage reporting from some of the most dangerous war zones in the world - particularly her reports from Tiananmen Square in 1989. She proved that female journalists were strong and brave enough to broadcast from any serious conflicts. I absolutely adore Jon Snow – it is not an understatement to say he is one of the best news presenters in this country. I will never forget him saying “Inshallah” at the end of a live report from Iraq, nor will I forget the excitement of getting emails from him while I was working at ITN!

What has been your most exciting time in media so far in your career?

I began my career at BBC Wales and was interested in the growing number of Filipino nurses coming over to work for the NHS. My bosses liked the idea and I ended up flying to Manila and interviewing the President about the issue. I was only 22 and very ‘green’ at that time. I had never reported for TV news before so it was certainly a steep learning curve but an experience I will never forget.

If you could do any job in media, what would it be?

I would love to be a reporter/presenter for Channel Four News or the BBC’s South Asia correspondent.

If you didn't get into media what career would of you been in today?

Probably selling UPVC windows! But on a more likely note the world of advertising has always appealed to me so I could imagine myself working in an aspect of that industry.
