Three years in the making, Til Jihad… was developed as a calling card script during a BBC Writers Residential in 2007. Fed up of the Islamaphobia that was still running rife in the news, I wanted to show how the fear had got to such an absurd level that there was nothing left to do but to laugh at it.
Following the residential, I was advised to extend it into a feature script, and submitted it to a nationwide film competition called The Big Pitch. Reaching the finals, unfortunately we did not win, and the team disbanded due to creative differences. However, Melanie Harris, who had championed the idea from the day I’d pitched it to her as a one-sentence logline at the residential, suggested it might be worth adapting the story into a radio play that she could produce. And so here we are.
I am currently rewriting the feature script to mirror modern times and hope to pitch it as a potential UK-Bollywood film production. There is also a possible radio series spin-off in the works. Stay tuned for more information at http://www.tinyurl.com/tilji
