In an exclusive interview with Ikonz magazine, the 26-year-old Hounslow native insisted theirs was a ‘special’ friendship, dismissing evidence to the contrary.
“You know a few people have been saying that, and it’s obvious they’re going to because we’re good friends and are working together. I also think it’s been fuelled by the YouTube videos going around.”
New York based singer Thara, who has just released her latest track ‘Jump On’ featuring Fat Man Scoop, has been touring alongside Jay Sean in the UK, Germany and Japan following their duet ‘M.U.R.D.E.R.
“She’s probably one of my closest friends, I’ve spent a lot of time with her and we’ve developed a great ‘friendship’, so people just put 2 and 2 together and come up with 11.”
Sean, who is currently promoting his new album ‘My Own Way’, also touched on how his move away from mainstream charts had a great deal to do with his record company failing to embrace his cultural vision.
“Yeah, I wanted to stick to my musical roots. Virgin wanted to go in the rock direction, and that isn’t what I do,” he told Ikonz editor Reena Combo.
“I don’t blame them for asking me that, because they’re a record company and that’s the way the market is heading but that isn’t what I want to be doing. I know what type of music I love doing, and that’s what I want to do.”
He went on to criticise the media for the coverage he’s received since his departure from Virgin.
“They’re not going to write on their headlines “Jay Sean leaves label to follow his dreams,” – what’s more gripping? “Jay Sean Dropped!” At the end of the day let the music speak for itself. I would have preferred the headline “Jay Sean has secret affair with Rishi Rich.”
Jay Sean’s interview and exclusive photo shoot appears in the November issue of Ikonz magazine.
Also in the latest edition are interviews with Boyz II Men, Coronation Street actress Kym Ryder, Emmerdale’s Kelvin Fletcher, Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, Caprice, Jacqueline Gold, Ameet Chana and Shihab Salim.
