1Xtra at the Africa Cup of Nations 2008

The Africa Cup of Nations – one of the biggest sporting events in the African continent – returns in January 2008. Some of the biggest names in England’s Premiership, including Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue, will be departing the UK to play for their home countries. 1Xtra will be featuring all the action and highlights from the 26th edition of the tournament, with a series of special shows from London and host nation Ghana.

Ras Kwame kicks off proceedings on January 13th with an exclusive 100% HomeGrown 5-a-side tournament, featuring four teams captained by 1Xtra’s very own African Nation representatives DJ Edu, Treble T, Twin B and Ace. The teams will be made up of some of the UK’s finest UK artists and producers of African heritage, all battling to be crowned the official 1Xtra HomeGrown African Nations champion. Award winning UK rapper Sway will be 1Xtra pitch side reporter for the tournament.

Ace, Treble T, and DJ Edu then travel to Ghana for the opening day of the competition on January 20th. Broadcasting live from Independence Square in Ghana’s capital city Accra, Ace, Treble and Edu will be capturing the excitement from the first match of the tournament – Ghana v Guinea. The boys will also catch up with football fans and explore just how big football is in that region.

Other highlights will include two special editions of DestiNation Africa with DJ Edu, live from the Royal City of Kumasi and the capital Accra. Edu will be exploring the music from some of the countries taking part in the championship as well as catching up with some of Ghana’s music stars for their unique commentary on the fortnight of football. Ace, Treble T and DJ Edu will also return for the closing ceremony to see whether reigning champions Egypt retain the title they won in 2006, or if host nation Ghana gain the home advantage.

Executive Producer Mainstream Programmes & Special Events Ray Paul said: “1Xtra is looking forward to covering the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time. We will be producing some pretty amazing radio shows – our listeners will be able to hear the energy and passion of African football fans while learning about how important this event is culturally. We’ll have a great team of presenters with Ace, Treble T and DJ Edu being perfectly placed to provide us with a great balance of knowledge and African heritage.”
