1Xtra Announces Leeds & Notting Hill Carnival Weekend 2006 Activity

1Xtra announced today its most ambitious broadcast schedule for August Bank Holiday Weekend 2006, with unprecedented coverage of both the Leeds and Notting Hill Carnivals.

The weekend of unique shows will run from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 August, taking a look at both Leeds Carnival, home to Europe’s first Caribbean-style carnival, and Europe’s biggest street carnival in London’s Notting Hill.

The station’s Leeds and Notting Hill Carnival broadcasts kick off on the Saturday night with a special broadcast from the first 1Xtra Leeds Pre-Carnival Party in Leeds, featuring 1Xtra’s Ronnie Herel and Dev.

1Xtra will be giving listeners over 12 hours of special broadcasting on Bank Holiday Monday 28 August, with live coverage from both Leeds and Notting Hill throughout the day. The weekend’s broadcast schedule will culminate in the 1Xtra Carnival After Party in London.

This year will mark the fourth year 1Xtra broadcasts from the Notting Hill Carnival, and the increased coverage of the Leeds Carnival illustrates 1Xtra’s continued commitment to exploring the UK’s rich cultural scenes.

1Xtra’s coverage over carnival weekend is the annual centrepiece of its live events calendar, placing the station at the forefront of live broadcasting, and giving listeners the chance to experience the action from across the UK.

1Xtra’s Executive Producer of Specialist And Live Events, Ray Paul, said: “This year our coverage represents an exciting growth both on and off air.

“Our increased presence in Leeds reflects an event which has proved to be a leader in its area and we will be bringing some of things that make that event special to a nationwide audience over the weekend.

“Our commitment to the Notting Hill Carnival has been unparalleled since we launched. This year is no different – from celebrating Caribbean music and culture at the 70 Degrees soca concert, to bringing the vibe of Rampage, the largest static sound in Carnival, we will covering the complete carnival experience for our listeners.”

Throughout the holiday weekend, 1Xtra’s leading DJs will be broadcasting live from the hub of both carnivals.

On Bank Holiday Monday (28 August), 1Xtra will host one of the three PoisonUK soca floats at the Notting Hill Carnival, alongside some of the most extravagant costumes, with presenters reporting live from the carnival route in London.

Rampage will be broadcasting from their Rampage Soundsystem tower which will once again be at the centre of the Notting Hill’s Carnival route.

Meanwhile 1Xtra will be reporting live from the heart of Potternewton Park, home of the Leeds Carnival.

Seani B (The Mix Lab show), Nesha (Lunchtime show) and Dev (Low Down show) will be coming from the heart of Leeds, with Rampage (The Breakfast Show), and Robbo Ranx (Dancehall Splurt) bringing listeners all the excitement from Notting Hill.

Leeds Carnival-goers will also be able to join Mistajam, Seani B, G Money, Dev and Jason, who will be playing at the special 1Xtra Soundsystem throughout on Sunday and Monday (off-air).

Throughout the day, 1Xtra will deliver news and vox pops from carnival goers in both cities.
