1Xtra Announces Hip Hop Weekend 2006

1Xtra will be hosting its fourth Hip Hop Weekend, the station’s annual celebration of Hip Hop music and culture, from 7pm Friday September 29th to 6am Monday October 2nd. This year’s special will feature some of the biggest names in US and UK Hip Hop, including P. Diddy, Lil Jon, Memphis Bleek, Broke ‘n’ English, and Ty, as well as showcasing emerging UK talent.

1Xtra’s own stellar set of Hip Hop DJs Semtex, Rodney P & Skitz, MistaJam and Blakey, will be hosting shows throughout Hip Hop Weekend which will feature live events, interviews, focusing on the culture behind the music. Each night at 10pm there will be a special two-hour documentary “The Life & Times Of”, with Rodney P taking an in-depth look at three superstar Hip Hop icons: Busta Rhymes, P Diddy, and Jermaine Dupri.

1Xtra and Radio 1’s Ras Kwame will be hosting a 100% Homegrown Special, teaming up with Semtex, Rodney P, Blakey and Skitz to take a look at the Hip Hop scenes in 4 different parts of the UK. Other highlights will include Semtex exploring San Francisco’s Hyphy scene, which is currently taking West Coast Hip Hop by storm. Semtex talks to some of the key players in San Francisco’s Bay area: E40, 2wiceberg Slimm, Backside, DJ E Rock, Souls of Mischief and Wolfpack.

Also featuring over the weekend is 2Pac Remembered: commemorating the 10th anniversary of 2Pac’s death; Hip Hop Poetry, hosted by Ty, showcases the work of some of the UK’s best Hip Hop poets; and the second Hip Hop Hall of Fame – following last year’s inaugural induction of Chuck D, this year 1Xtra will be honouring the artist and actor Ice Cube – original member of one of the most controversial crews in Hip Hop history, NWA.

There will also be guest shows from Lil Jon, DJ Drama, and Broke ‘n’ English. 1Xtra Live will be treating listeners to an exclusive live recording from the official Roc A Fella Records Party with a special performance from Memphis Bleek.

1Xtra continues to place importance on new talent, and will be asking budding music makers to send in their tracks. Twin B will be selecting some of these tracks to debut on 1st Play a unique showcase for emerging rappers and beat-makers – please check the website for information on how to submit tracks.
