Sporting Equals to host launch event for Chelsea Asian Star 2013 supported by Peter Virdee

Sporting Equals will be hosting an ‘Asian Star’ pre-event alongside European Champions, Chelsea Football Club, with a special coaching and training session that will offer young boys from Asian communities an opportunity to be put through their paces with the club’s coaches.

This session is specifically designed to empower participants with confidence and will also give them a chance hone their technique ahead of the Asian Star 2013 competition on Monday 6 May.
Sporting Equals is an organisation that works to promote the inclusion of under-represented communities in sport and physical activity. They work closely with sports providers to support them to improve and increase sustainable sports opportunities for the under-represented communities and Asian Star 2013 forms part of its wider work to help meet these objectives.
This special event will take place at Three Bridges Primary School, in Southall on Sunday 14th April, and will give 100 boys the opportunity to be put through a series of challenges and small-sided games to help participants prepare for Asian Star 2013, which will take place at the Chelsea’s training ground in Cobham.
The ‘Asian Star’ campaign will be hosted at the world famous Chelsea training ground in Cobham in May to identify a player who will win a season-long placement at the European Champion’s Football Development Centre.
As well as empowering players, local coaches will be given the opportunity to learn from club’s qualified coaching staff by supporting activities on the day. Participation will be on a first-come first served basis and if your child would like to register for the pre-event please log onto http://www.sportingequals.org.uk/PICS/Chelsea%20-%20Asian%20star%20training%20session%2014th%20April%20(2).doc
Sporting Equals CEO Arun Kang said: “Sporting Equals are delighted to be hosting this special coaching and training session alongside the Chelsea Foundation. Collectively, we will not only be offering kids a taster to what will happen at the final in May, but we will also be giving an opportunity for local coaches to learn from the Chelsea Foundation coaches as they will be delivering some of the sessions together. This initiative forms part of our wider work to get more people playing sport more regularly and also expose local communities to other opportunities such as coaching, officiating and volunteering in football. We want to support young people and their friends and families to be the best they can be.”
Asian Star, now in its fifth year, is open to boys from the ages of eight to 12 from south Asian backgrounds, and this year looks set to be the biggest event yet. Youngsters from all over the UK are signing up to register for the finale event now at www.chelseafc.com/asianstar.
Sporting Equals Ambassador, Peter Virdee, an Asian Business Entrepreneur and iconic figure within the Asian community, is supporting the campaign and is encouraging kids and the community to get involved.
Peter said: “Asian Star is a fantastic initiative by the Chelsea FC Foundation that I am fully supporting. It is important to support Asian Star as it offers a platform for the club to proactively engage with the south Asian community as a whole. The more we see youngsters from our community participate in initiatives such as Asian Star the more we can work together to encourage south Asian youngsters to get involved in the game.”
Those attending will also be given the opportunity to get involved in a health and nutrition workshop developed by professionals from the health sector that have expertise in working with south Asian communities.
Simon Taylor, head of the Chelsea Foundation, said: “Asian Star has been a huge success since it first started and this year promises to be the best event yet. We’re really looking forward to working alongside Sporting Equals to help make participation in our national game available to all.’
