Swami Ramdevji – whose satellite TV shows and DVDs are watched by millions of people across the globe – came to Leicester to deliver a one-off yoga camp for devotees. Inspired by Swami Ramdevji’s belief that ‘good health is humanity’s birth right’, the event was organised with the support of UK-based charity Patanjali Yog Peeth (UK) Trust in association with GURDWARA, GURPANTH PRAKASH, 19 ASHFORD ROAD, LEICESTER and the People of Leicester with the sole aim of promoting yoga and good health.
Sanjay Jagatia of Patanjali Yog Peeth Trust UK said “Swami Ramdevji’s impact in India is without doubt inspiring – he has revolutionised yoga, leading to millions of people incorporating it in their daily routines with businesses taking yoga breaks and schools making it a part of their daily assemblies. Currently, Swami Ramdevji is probably the most well known person in India, admired and followed by people from all walks of life, from politicians and Bollywood celebrities, to housewives and rickshaw drivers”.
With India conquered and committed to improving their health and daily lifestyle, Swami Ramdevji has extended his message to people across the globe. Swami Ramdevji has successfully conducted over one hundred, week-long workshops around the world which have been attended by over 15 million people. Under his guidance, a large number people have claimed to have improved health and found relief from stress and persistent ailment.
Sanjay Jagatia continued “The secret to Swami Ramdevji’s success is his ability to simplify the techniques of Pranayam Yoga and teach it in a way that makes it easy for everyone – young or old. The impact of his teachings is evident across India. To fresh eyes, some of the exercises may seem slightly odd, but each has a purpose as are clearly explained by Swami Ramdevji and supported by his followers. Over 1600 people attended this unique event and experienced the teachings of this extraordinary man, who showed them the intricacies of Pranayam Yoga.
People from as far afield as America, Canada, India and Africa flew over to Leicester to take part in the yoga session, which ran from 7am to 9.30am.
The event saw people from different communities sitting next to each other, most of them who had been queuing to get inside the venue from 5.30am in the morning.
Swami Ramdevji visited Leicester as part of a six-day successful tour of the country, which saw him teaching in eight cities including Ilford, Neasden, Northolt, Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Thousands of devotees attended each of the events across the UK, with many enrolling to be trained as Assistant Yoga Teachers in order to promote the mission further, and teach the benefits of Yoga to the masses.
Sanjay Jagatia continued “this was undoubtedly one of the biggest events of the tour. We now want to take Swami Ramdevji’s mission further and teach yoga not just to the Asian community but also to the mainstream, in all the Towns and Cities in the UK. Patanjali Yog Peeth UK Trust intends to present the results from our highly successful Yog classes to the PCT, NHS and the local Council, with an aim of providing Yoga on the mainstream NHS as well as in schools, hospices and day centres, as a preventative and curative healthcare measure. We wish to propagate pranayam as a “free” medicine through in-depth research in accordance with the parameters of modern medical science, so that everyone may avail its benefits in order to attain sound health. Furthermore, we intend to create an environment in Departments of Education, Health, Forces, Administration, Industry and Business to inspire them to adopt Yoga as a regular and necessary practice and to educate them on establishing a healthy lifestyle.”
Sanjay Jagatia concluded “by furthering the mission of Swami Ramdevji we also aim to build bridges between communities by establishing a healthy environment that creates greater understanding towards diverse cultures, social environments and religious beliefs”.
Speaking to the crowds at the Guru Panth Prakash Gurdwara, in Ashford Road, Swami Ramdevji said: “Yoga is the way of life. Good Health is Humanity’s Birthright, Yoga is an ancient medicine. Make yoga your future, your life”.
Priti Raichura, compere for the event and Yoga teacher said: “We had a huge turnout. It just shows that there’s a real interest out there for people wanting to learn more about how they can live healthier lives. What was so nice to see was there were people from different backgrounds, all walks of life. We had Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians all coming together to practice these ancient techniques. We were very fortunate to have this here in Leicester.”
The event was graced by The Lord Mayor of Leicester Manjula Sood and The Baroness Sandip Verma of Leicester. The Lord Mayor said in her opening ceremony speech that “Health includes not only the physical body but also spiritual, mental, and self-discipline. Swamiji’s mission and message for the entire world is that “Good Health is Humanity’ Birthright” and that everyone can achieve a healthy lifestyle through Yog and Pranayam. I wish to thank Swamiji for giving Leicester people an opportunity to learn from him ways in which we can live a healthier life”.
The day also marked the start of an important venture, with the Grand opening of Herbs and Yoga – a newly formed company specialising in herbal supplements which was officially opened by His Holiness Swami Ramdevji himself at 8 Briton Street (off Narborough Road) Leicester). Herbs and Yoga will be Leicester’s premier herbal and health food store stocking Swami Ramdevji’s own ‘Divya Yog’ brand of herbal medication, food supplements, books and DVDs. An Ayurvedic Doctor from Haridwar will also be on site to offer FREE specialist consultation and health advice.
“I wish Leicester’s Kishore Jain every success in this venture which will also help Leicester achieve a healthy lifestyle” The Lord Mayor of Leicester concluded.
