Shades of Blackness

Shades of Blackness

A free live debate about the issues of black identity takes place at the Merseyside Maritime Museum on Monday 7 August 2006 from 1730 hours – 2030 hours.

Shades of Blackness is a ‘Question Time’- style session, where a panel will field questions from an audience exploring issues on what it is to be black in Liverpool. Whether blackness is based purely on the colour of one’s skin, or if it defined by culture and environment are some of the topics open for debate.

Some of the panel members include:

Chair: Professor Stephen Small – Liverpool born black academic
Tony Vaughn – black and ethnic minority project officer from the University of Liverpool
Danielle Shaw – Toxteth Educational Trust
The event is a partnership between National Museums Liverpool and Toxteth Education trust and it opens with a welcome address from David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool. This is followed by a historical breakdown of the Caribbean Americas, Africa and Liverpool and performance from the One Heart Choir.

In another event, staff from National Museums Liverpool is presenting the latest gallery plans for the new Museum of Liverpool and International Slavery Museum at the Kuumba Imani Community Centre. There is an open forum for discussion and a question and answers session from 1500 hours to 1900 hours on Thursday 10 August 2006.
