Adeeba speaks up for women at Number 10

A Yorkshire chief executive has attended an exclusive event with the Prime Minister to celebrate International Women’s Day (Thursday 8 March). Adeeba Malik, deputy chief executive of Bradford-based QED UK, took part in discussions over breakfast with some of the most powerful women in politics.

Adeeba was joined by 40 representatives from organisations across the UK to mark the day and to discuss the issues facing women in today’s society. The event was hosted by Tony Blair and guests included Tessa Jowell, Ruth Kelly and Patricia Hewitt.

The event gave the women the opportunity to pose questions to the cabinet ministers and for them to respond and inform them of the action plans they have in place to improve the status of women in the UK. Topics included flexible working, child care issues, the role of women in the voluntary sector and the problem of trafficking women from European countries.

Adeeba’s interest lies in the role of women working at grass roots level in the community. Her question to the ministers focused on how they planned to increase the numbers of women involved in decision making at this level – encouraging them, for example, to become councillors, magistrates or join their local PTA.

Adeeba said: “The ministers were genuinely interested in the issues we raised and took on board the suggestions we all made from our own experiences. My work with QED is concerned with improving the lives of people from different backgrounds, and improving the role of women in the community features highly in our remit. I was delighted to be invited to represent women from across Yorkshire at this event.”

National economic development charity QED UK works with businesses and community groups to improve the standards of education and employment for those of South East Asian origin. The charity recently launched a DVD which encourages more Muslim women to enter the workforce and offers advice on how to tackle the barriers they face.” For more information on QED UK visit www.qed-uk.org
