Yaaba Funk Celebrate Ghana and Play Rich Mix on Saturday 3 July

YAABA FUNK – known for their feisty floor-filling fusion of retro Ghanaian highlife/21st century broken beats with a dash of afrobeat and funk play Free at RICH MIX, Bethnal Green Road on SATURDAY 3 July as part of World Cup Festival combining music and huge screen football live screenings of all the matches. Saturday is a quarter final- and could even be Ghana’s next match. Yaaba Funk are celebrating the release of their debut album AFROBEAST on their own Yaabaphone label and the clinching of a manufacturing and distribution deal with major World Music Company – STERNS MUSIC.

Richmond Kessie,Yaaba Funk’s exuberant front man and Paul Brett – analogue bass player made sure to be at Rich Mix on Saturday 26th when Ghana played USA in an epic game which showed their tight defence, powerful teamwork and sure footed scoring skills when they saw USA off 2:1.As was British born Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong and a venue-full of delighted partisans.

After the match a euphoric crowd spilled outside to celebrate with a photo in front of Larry Achiampong ‘s impassioned and subtly political mural as part of the Degree Gallery’s mural commission opposite Rich Mix. Larry Achiampong is a rising young Slade MFA graduate (2008) who has attracted a great deal of critical interest for his trademark large round solid black heads with bright red lips. In his mural entitled The Cut the heads are without bodies and look like human footballs. The mural has a strong message about young African footballers enticed to Europe and then abandoned.

Joining Larry and the Yaaba Funksters are musicians Muntu Valdo (Cameroonian – who recently played at Rich Mix and is shortly due to embark on a UK wide tour) and rapper/wordsmith M3NSA who’s film collaboration ‘Cos ov Moni’ with fellow Ghanaian Wanlov launches in London soon,

"Ghana’s win means a lot to us – it’s more than simply football. It’s a recognition of strength and integrity and more than makes up for being bullied at school for being different’ Larry Achiampong and Richmond Kessie agreed. Larry said he was really looking forward to dancing his feet off at Yaaba Funk’s gig at Rich Mix on Saturday 3 July "I’ll be right at the front!" .In turn the Yaaba Funk guys were proud to be photographed with Larry’s work.

The gig at Rich Mix is free and immediately follows Saturday 3 July’s quarter final> As well as the fantastic live band Yaaba Funk’s DJ crew Chief Commander, Mr Brett,Outlaw Clive Wales and Volta45 (who only plays vinyl) will be keeping the pace super hot and funky.
If Ghana win their quarter final (whether Friday or Saturday) imagine the atmosphere! The event is Free!
