The golden age of Bollywood was a riot of saturated colour, flamboyance and dramatic excess. The music of masters such as R.D. Burman and Kalyanji Anandji was unmatched in terms of bizarre experimentation, deep sophistication and outright funky badness: a treasure trove for sample hungry hip-hop heads and secretive, vinyl-obsessed funk collectors.
The Bombay Royale both pays tribute to this psychedelic era and also creates something fresh and entirely idiosyncratic. Old and new collides in spectacular fashion with a dizzying blend of Tarantino-esque surf, wild disco, flamboyant theatrics and swirls of kaleidoscopic colour. Seductive melody lines float over an epic cinematic landscape that is exotic, teasing and utterly unique.
Their acclaimed debut album ‘You Me Bullets Love’ is a blend of haunting Hindi and Bengali vocals, pulsing deep funk and disco breaks and shimmering surfadelic beats. Expect huge horn riffs, wild spaghetti guitar, bustling tabla, screaming organs and all the synthesizers, sitars and strings that made the music of 1960s and 1970s Bollywood so electrifying. Starring vocalists Parvyn Kaur Singh as "The Mysterious Lady" and Shourov Bhattacharya as "The Tiger," ‘You Me Bullets Love’ is the soundtrack to a story of espionage, excitement, extended dance sequences and the eternal power of true love. Featuring eight originals and two fascinating re-workings of long-forgotten Bollywood production numbers the album which was released in May 2012 and has won wide acclaim, including a place in iTunes Best of 2012 and #1 on the iTunes World Music charts.
The Bombay Royale’s fantastic – bordering on surreal – live performances are always a wonder to behold, and the Melbourne-based 11-piece is excited to be touring Europe for the first time this summer, including a London headline show and festival appearances at Glastonbury, Larmer Tree, Cambridge Folk Festival, Secret Garden Party and WOMAD. Rumours of them being accompanied by a 10ft inflatable crowd surfing elephant called "The Colonel" may or may not be accurate.
