Shantel and Bucovina Club Orkestar Live at KOKO 20/02/08

With recent hit album Disko Partizani! still making waves throughout Europe and riding high on commercial and critical acclaim in the U.K, Crammed Discs are delighted to announce Shantel live at KOKO, Camden, on 20/02/08.

Having torn through Europe with delirious live sets and estatic DJ nights for the past decade and more, Shantel’s legendary live show will be enhanced by his new musical direction, live sound and big band line-up. To hear the Disko Partizani album played live will be a shamelessly joyous affair, it’s an unapologetically singable album, brimming with catchy bursts of international musical flavour and choruses delivered in Shantel’s laconically alluring vocal that demands you join his party.

With Disko Partizani!, Shantel defined the sound of new Europe, successfully melding his experiences as a producer, musician and DJ to create catchy, energetic and exultant pop songs, full of hooks and surprises. Eastern European elements were adopted with real respect for their cultural roots, and then fused and transformed into a new form of urban music, bestriding the music of east and west creating an album of unparalleled joie de vivre.

Throughout the album pop-soaked, effervescent moments wash over you and ensconce themselves into your subconscious; Disko Boy, the camp, Eurobeat tale of a boozy night out in a seedy European club trying to find a partner for the night could well be a story told by The Streets’ Mike Skinner about a drinking competition with Boris Becker in a smoky strip-joint in Budapest. The ludicrously upbeat Sota is powered along by the unrelenting ska rhythm of Shantel’s guitar that launches into a dynamic chorus of raucous gypsy campfire debauchery, The Veil is charged by a powerful underlying, almost military style snare-roll of a rhythm that charges this ambitiously-layered instrumental ode to gypsy power, and Shantel even manages to find time to invent the new genre of Gypsy Rhythm+Western where R+B meets Romanian hoedown beat of Dubstar Bugarskji.

Shantel’s live shows are a no-holds-barred display of non-stop musical energy, combine this live exuberance with his riotous new material and prepare yourself for a musical experience of pure, unadulterated fun.
