Mavis Staples and Jhelisa

Mavis Staples and Jhelisa

Enjoy a glorious baptism of deep-rooted soul and uplifting gospel from a bona fide music legend when Mavis Staples appears at The Anvil on Wednesday 16 April. She’ll be joined by one of the brightest Soul Jazz stars, Jhelisa Anderson.

From her formative years with the Staples Singers – performing for the likes of JFK and Martin Luther King – to a remarkable solo career, Mavis Staples has worked her vocal magic on the highways and byways of gospel, folk, soul and blues. En route, she has shared stage and studio with everyone from Prince and Dylan to Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin. In these very special concerts, the first lady of US gospel revisits Staples Singers classics such as I’ll Take You There and Respect Yourself alongside seminal Civil Rights era freedom songs revisited on 2007’s Ry Cooder-produced solo outing We’ll Never Turn Back.

A perfect foil for Mavis comes from Jhelisa Anderson, from another distinguished musical family. Her aunt was the voice of the James Brown’s and her cousin Carleen Anderson of the Young Disciples. Jhelisa came to UK attention with her big hit, the cool funk tune Friendly Pressure which saw her take to the stage with artists like Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Courtney Pine and Massive Attack.
Tickets are priced at £18.50. Under 16s and students pay £10. Call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244. Or use the Anvil Arts website www.anvilarts.org.uk.
