Circles is a seamless blending of influences as varied as Bill Withers, Cole Porter, Odetta and the Wainwright family – “The Father, Son and The Holy Martha”, by way of a voice that at turns caresses, pleads, and testifies; a tribute to Krystle’s long departed Southern Baptist upbringing.

Her songs resonate with passionately delivered melodies and memorable arrangements, intriguing lyrics and tight, back up courtesy of Krystle’s New York band, The Faculty, and the result is a 21st century boho take on the quiet storm. Krystle has talent to burn and Circles is the first giant step along the way.

Krystle’s Later with Jools Holland debut two weeks ago announced the arrival of a truly special new talent; one of those “Jools moments”. Krystle performed her own “Year End Issue”, channelling loose-limbed acoustic funk with defiance and integrity; Joan Armatrading’s grace and a Jeff Buckleyesque vocal and emotional range – all swathed in a soulful intensity uniquely her own.

And on Later’s Friday edition Krystle’s “unbottled magic” takes possession of the studio as she, accompanied by pianist Victor Vagh, thrills the audience and production crew alike with a consummate performance of Circles.

You can appreciate both performances with your own eyes, ears and soul below*.

On the BBC World Service’s “The Strand” Mark Coles introduces Krystle as “Nina Simone meets Bob Dylan in the age of Obama”. I won’t attempt to top that. Please check the links below and we’ll see you at the Union Chapel.

Krystle Warren hails from Kansas City and learned to play the guitar by listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver. Her tastes range from Rufus Wainwright to Betty Carter, Willie Nelson to Nina Simone and she’s toured the US with Martha Wainwright, Zap Mama, Rodrigo & Gabriela and Erykah Badu. Krystle is signed to Because Music, the label that brought you Amadou & Mariam, Justice, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Manu Chao.
