Juwon Ogungbe Launches Life Force Music in a mini meltdown at The Africa Centre

Birth of a Sound…a Sensibility. .. Acclaimed Composer and Singer Juwon Ogungbe will launch his debut album “Life Force Music” at The Africa Centre, Covent Garden, on Friday 9th March 2012 with a mini meltdown style event. Those attending can anticipate richly textured African infused Jazz, Classical, Dance Music – well outside the box ,as a part of a fabulous evening of live music, ceremony and discussion. Juwon’s band – will play album highlights; a distinguished panel will explore Juwon’s musical vocabulary and influences and formal blessings will be offered.

Juwon Ogungbe is a fine musician and composer and has a long association with London’s iconic The Africa Centre where soon to be leaders of emerging African nations met in the past, which dates back to the 1980s. He now joins forces with the Africa Centre to present an exciting evening with a libation and discussion, and a show that will feature highlights from “Life Force Music”, a band comprising of some of the UK’s finest young African and Caribbean musicians, some luminous guest performers and contributions from prominent fellow artists and social commentators from the UK African arts scene.

The CD will be available for the first time at the event which starts promptly at 7.30pm.

Echoing the curatorial steps of a “Meltdown” season, the launch will feature the following elements: Birth of a Sound….. a Sensiblity – A discussion that will shed light on the wide range of musical elements that have coalesced to form Juwon Ogungbe’s current musical vocabulary. An element of this is the influence of many years of hearing and associating with musicians from all of Africa, whom he encountered at The Africa Centre over the last few decades. The profile panellists alongside Juwon Ogungbe will be Nana Ocran, Jumoke Fashola and Hans Peter Kuenzler; Live Performance: Juwon will perform with his band…. a thrilling combo featuring some of the sharpest young UK African and Caribbean musicians in London, plus two guest appearances from eminent flautist Rowland Sutherland (ex Jazz Warrior) and Joyce Moholoagae (South African Soprano) and a formal Launching/Blessing for the album conducted by a senior fellow artist from London’s African community – Gwen White of The Royal Commonwealth Society.

Juwon Ogungbe said “I am very proud to launch “Life Force Music” at The Africa Centre – a place which has shaped so much of my professional and personal experiences” Juwon has a long illustrious career and an album is long in the making. Juwon added " When i was a baby I started talking later than expected. One day I took the decision to speak … and there was no stopping me. And so it shall be from now on with recorded music now I have found my voice . “

Life Force Music” is a rich textural experience part social commentary, part personal sharing showcasing Juwon Ogungbe’s melliferous baritone and innovative compositions. It’s intensely musical, crossing between AfroRhythms, Classical and the mainstream in a compelling and immensely enjoyable crisply produced and very welcome album.

Juwon Ogungbe, born to Nigerian parents in England and educated here and in Nigeria, has collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company, The South Bank, Royal Exchange Theatre. Lucumi Choir, Lontano, The British Council … so much more as composer, opera singer, band leader …. He has just returned from a British Council commission in Zimbabwe. Juwon’s diverse skills and influences appear in the album.

The Africa Centre, Covent Garden Life Force Music launch on Friday 9th March 2012, with its exciting presentation promises to be a landmark experience in music in the capital.
