HEAR, O ISRAEL
Originally recorded by Herbie Hancock’s quintet in 1968 and re-released by Trunk Records in 2008, Hear, O Israel is a unique work in Jewish music.
Composed for a New York shul by the then-teenage Jonathan Klein, now Professor at the world-famous Berklee College of Music, Boston, Hear, O Israel incorporates the core prayers of a traditional Friday night service. Klein arranged these prayers for eleven jazz musicians including four singers. The work will be performed here in the UK for the first time.
FOUR PIECES FOR PEACE
Four Pieces for Peace is a suite of meditations on prospects and dreams of a more friendly future – a companion to Hear, O Israel. This new music has been commissioned by F-IRE composers, including Barak Schmool, Jonathan Bratoeff, Nick Ramm and Tom Mason.
A musician-led association, the ten-year-old F-IRE COLLECTIVE today maintains a record label with more than 30 releases, an education programme and regular performances. Tonight’s performers include leading UK jazz singers Eska, Cleveland Watkiss, Heidi Vogel and Marcina Arnold.
With thanks to the Arts Council England and Jonathan and Lucy Silver.
