Global Rhythm Drops Print Magazine

Global Rhythm Drops Print Magazine

Last week brought the sad news that Global Rhythm, the much loved US World Music Magazine, is to go digital only and discontinue its print version.

A cover note sent to existing subscribers explained how “due to astronomical costs increases and our desire to reach a broader audience, we have decided to take [Global Rhythm] completely digital.”

The world music monthly periodical, started in 1992, consistently strove to expose artists often unknown outside of their home countries to the US audience and will be sadly missed. Alternative world music magazines are unfortunately thin on the ground with only UK based Songlines and Froots perhaps offering adequate replacements.

With regard to the future of Global Rhythm online, they now face the enormous task of re-inventing themselves in a new medium and freeing themselves from the influences of a print based past.

We can only wish them luck and wait to see what happens.
