Favela Feva - The best DJs and artists from the UK and Brazil come together for this charity event

“Since the year 2000, four thousand children have died as a result of the war between rival drug gangs in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro ….” Patrick Neate ‘Culture is our Weapon’

A few have chosen to fight this largely unreported war…

On September 5th the best DJs and artists from the UK and Brazil come together for FAVELA FEVA, a one-off event to raise money for a radio station to be built in one of Rio’s toughest favelas.

London’s top Brazilian venue Guanabara will host FAVELA FEVA with DJs Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), DJ Marky (Innerground, Brazil), Bryan G (Movement/V), Benji B (1Xtra BBC), Bongo DJs (Mr Bongo), DJ Limão (Jungle Drums Sambatralia) plus guests. They will be joined by MCs Dynamite and Skibadee. Dancing will be courtesy of Quilombo de Samba (Basement Jaxx) and Capoeira Canal. There will also be an exclusive live set performed by Bembe Segue (Goya Music). The UK’s own Ty (Big Dada) and Estelle (V2) will be the hosts for the night and there will be a short presentation from Patrick Neate, the co-writer of seminal book ‘Culture Is Our Weapon’. All contributors will be offering their services for free. All proceeds will go towards providing the favela’s youth with training and equipment to build and run a new community radio station.

The station will fuse over 60 social action projects organised by AfroReggae, the internationally acclaimed hip hop act and Rio-based NGO. Their samba bands, theatre groups, circuses, Capoeira and computer schools provide the youth with alternatives to the life of drug trafficking and gang culture which otherwise awaits them. AfroReggae was born out of a massacre in 1993 when police entered the favela of Vigário Geral and killed 21 innocent people, including the brother of AfroReggae’s lead singer Anderson Sá. Instead of taking to the streets with guns, Anderson teamed up with fellow-minded people like Jose Junior, began a pamphlet of revolt and started a band. Culture became their weapon of choice.
