Dark & Light Zone – Marek Chołoniewski

Dark & Light Zone - Marek Chołoniewski

Between the 8th September until the 1st October, 2006, IMT will become host to Dark & Light Zone, a continuous interactive piece of ‘sonic art’ conceived and assembled by the internationally renowned Polish composer Marek Chołoniewski and curated by Pawel Kaminski. Dark & Light Zone transforms IMT’s front gallery space into a giant light sensor that will pick up movements of visitors to the performance. These movements will be fed into a computer and replayed as sounds, creating an ever-changing sonic experience that utilises the bodies of the audience as musical instruments.

Dark & Light Zone will be open to the public from the 8th September to 1st October, from Thursday – Sunday, 12 – 6 pm. Entrance to the gallery is free. In addition to the main piece the exhibition will include an ‘intervention’ by young Polish sound artist Wojciech Kosma, an evening performance by emerging sound artists from the UK and a talk by the project’s curator Pawel Kaminski and Dr. Nye Parry of Middlesex University. The project has been supported by the Polish Cultural Institute, Awards for All, GO and IMT.

The main installation is Chołoniewski’s most recent attempt to ‘tame virtual space’ using new technology and the audience. In 1997 Chołoniewski developed a multilevel computer music system to translate any movement in a space into complex sound structures. Chołoniewski is a composer, ‘live computer music’ performer, and author of audio-visual computer projects. He is initiator and artistic director of Audio Art Festival and International Workshops for New Music Krakow/Stuttgart. Since 2000 he is director of the Electro-Acoustic Music Studio of the Krakow Academy of Music.
