BBC award-winning world music stars play Streatham Festival

The hottest new act in world music is coming to South London, as Mali band Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni ba arrive fresh from their European tour to play the Streatham Festival, with World Sounds @ St Leonard’s on Saturday 12 July, 2008. The two-times winners at this year’s BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music will be showcasing their unique brand of African blues that won them Best African Artist and Best Album of the Year, and wowed audiences at Womad.

Centred around the stunning sounds of the ngoni (a West African lute), Bassekou Kouyate’s acoustic music riffs intricately over a throbbing bass line. The Guardian called it “like some African answer to Hendrix”, and moved Mojo to declare the band “a new star to replace the king of the blues from Timbuktu”.

The spellbinding Brazilian solo percussionist, Adriano Adewale, will also be supporting. Formerly of the Antonio Forcione Quartet, Adriano has toured the globe with his electrifying, virtuoso drumming performances.

World Sounds event organiser Andrew Simpson says: “We are very excited to have Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni ba playing at the festival. This is fantastic opportunity for Londoners to see this astonishing talent and experience the excitement, dexterity and warmth of his live shows.”

The event is sponsored by Anthony Gold Solicitors, who have been providing specialist legal advice to businesses and individuals in Streatham for over 40 years. A spokesperson for the company says: “The Partners of Anthony Gold are delighted to once again be sponsoring a major event at St Leonard’s Church for the Streatham Festival 2008. We wish the organisers every success.”
