An Evening of Ghazals & Sufiana Qalam

An Evening of Ghazals & Sufiana Qalam

Ghazal singing has, in recent times, experienced an onslaught of several musical forms including Geet, Qawwali and pop-music with colorful orchestration a la Bollywood films. Several present day Ghazal singers over indulge in Raagdari Ghazals with a surfeit of taans and sargams not exactly conducive for elaborating the literary content.

The ideal form of ghazal singing, however, is a moderate deployment of one of the principal ragas as the base for its melodic structure in a manner which offers liberal scope for the singer to elaborate the lyrical contents as conceived by the poet.

It was thus gratifying to attend a recital by Shevanti Sanyal at the Nehru Centre on 11th Nov, who has established herself as an accomplished singer of light classical genre, particularly Ghazals and Sufi music. She kept every one present enthralled with her captivating voice, tunefully opening the evening with the Ghazal “Agar Talash Karun Koi Mil Hi Jayega”, followed by the evergreen ghazal “Aye mohabbat tere anjam pe rona aaya” sung with emotion and great melodic appeal. Equally pleasing was her singing of the popular ghazal by Faiyaz Hashmi “Aaj jane ki zid na karo” which delighted the audience. The famous Amir Khusrau Sufi qalam “Chhap Tilak Sab Chhini Re Mose Naina Milaike” was rendered towards the end in a deep pensive mood. Shevanti concluded her recital with “Ishq me gairatenjazbat ne rone na diya” with appropriate application of the raga Behag. Her performance revealed the maturity she has attained in Ghazal singing. with a good understanding of poetic content. Shevanti opened the evening with delighted. The accompaniment in tabla by Hafiz Khan was complementary and competent and the harmonium accompaniment by Fida Hussain Khan was excellent.
