Africa to Brazil: Rhythms of Life

Africa to Brazil: Rhythms of Life

To launch their 3rd Annual London Event, Kabula presents a special evening dedicated to the intoxicating rhythms of Afro-Brazil. This event is part of Black History Month.

What does the term “Afro-Brazil” conjure up in our minds? Samba? Carnival? Think again. This evening is a chance to uncover the ‘other’ face of this rich and fascinating culture and discover the roots of its music and dance. And all in the decadent surroundings of Belgrave Square, London.

Mestre Neco, reknowned master of Capoeira Angola, will be over from Rio de Janeiro to lead an interactive discussion about the music and oral traditions of Capoeira. He will also speak on the movements of Capoeira Angola by talking about how theatre and clowning can be incorporated into the ‘roda’ (game). Also involved in the discussion are Mestre Carlao from Kabula, himself a master and scholar of the game, and Dr. Matthias Röhrig Assunção from Essex University, one of the world’s leading academic authorities on Capoeira.

Evening concludes with a dynamic performance by Mestre Neco, Mestre Carlao with Kabula’s ‘Ritmos da Terra’ orchestra and Maracatu group ‘Estrela do Norte’ playing classic Afro-Brazilian rhythms with traditional instruments and costumes. Caipirinhas and delicious feijoada (black bean stew) will be flowing after the performance.
