UK Premiere of The Wanderer (STRANNIK), a film by Sergei Karandashov

A new name in Russian cinema, Sergei Karandashov, continues the tradition of spiritual search of Russian literature and such filmmakers as Andrei Tarkovsky, Alexandr Sorkurov and Alexei Gherman (his mentor). Before making the film, Sergei joined a group of Russian pilgrims in Siberia walking for months to worship at a sacred religious site, sleeping around bonfires and retelling their life stories. It’s from encounters with these people, who would not be out of place in a Dostoyevsky novel, that the idea for the film grew. The story of a crime on the surface, The Wanderer could not be further from a run-of-the-mill whodunit film as it steers away from well-trodden paths and easy solutions.

The story of The Wanderer begins when a sensitive young man, Fyodor, witnesses the death of those he loved. Believing that he has survived for a reason, he retreats to a forest to live the life of a hermit. There he is joined by an orthodox monk who seeks to show the ‘wanderer’ the way to God, but soon he too loses his life in a freak accident. Left on his own again, Fyodor returns to the real world to end his life, only to be halted in his tracks by witnessing a miracle and experiencing a revelation.
