The premiere, which forms part of the Film 4 Summer Screen programme, will be held as one of the glittering highlights of India Now, a three-month season celebrating London’s growing relationship with India and exploration of India’s culture and its contribution to London life.
Attended by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the event will see London’s magnificent Somerset House transformed into a full-scale open-air cinema, complete with a state of the art giant screen, 35mm projection and surround-sound. Following a red carpet arrival, up to 2,000 moviegoers will enjoy the film’s debut within the majestic setting of Somerset House’s courtyard.
Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shimit Amin, Chak De India is the comeback story of an ageing hockey player (Shah Rukh Khan). The film sees Khan starring as coach, fighting his personal demons as he takes a motley group of girls to the pinnacle of world hockey.
A sell-out success in its first two years, the Film 4 Summer Screen at Somerset House is a major new initiative for film in London. With early evening music performances and food and drinks being served ahead of the screening for viewers, it is the ultimate outdoor cinema experience, right in the heart of London’s West End.
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, said, “We have many wonderful events taking place across London throughout the three month duration of India Now and the world premiere of Chak De India will undoubtedly be one of the biggest and most exciting. It is a great honour for London to host this launch event for a film, which, like so many Bollywood blockbusters, will touch the hearts and minds of millions across the world.”
James Bidwell, Chief Executive Officer of London Unlimited, said, “India is one of the fastest growing markets on the planet and as such it is critical for London to engage on all levels. India Now is an amazing festival which further connects London and Londoners with India.”
The India Now season is set to launch on Tuesday 17th July with a spectacular visual display of India and London’s most iconic landmarks. The event will be attended by a selection of famous Indian and London cultural ambassadors. Over 150 of London’s cultural organisations and attractions will participate in the India Now season, which will showcase India’s contribution to world culture, its rich tradition and most importantly celebrate new Indian trends across business, art, film, theatre, food, music and fashion.
