Place and Moving Image: Vertigo Launch (15)

Vertigo magazine champions innovation and diversity in form and culture for independent film and the moving image. This event launches the latest issue and discusses some of the themes within.

Internationalist in outlook, and without borders in its search for the most imaginative work in artists’ film, documentary, new media and world cinema, Vertigo engages audiences, filmmakers, and students, introducing new voices and critical debate.

This issue reports from Tibet, Estonia, Germany, India, Russia, Spain, Israel and Suffolk, and features original writing from Tilda Swinton, John Berger, Stephen Barber, Hannah Collins and Andrew Kotting – whose work forms part of tonight’s special programme of short films. The films move from an exploration of northern India’s ship breaking yards in HAMMER AND FLAME to the spirited steps of Greg Pope’s MOONWALK and Bernd Behr’s military test-sited HOUSE WITHOUT A DOOR.

“Aiming to do for British film what Cahiers du Cinema did for the Nouvelle Vague of 1950s and 1960s France, this twice-yearly magazine takes its movies seriously … British film may be in a state of perpetual financial crisis, but Vertigo is proof that it is as intellectually healthy as ever.”
