Bollywood cinema is a worldwide phenomenon, with massive audiences at home in India and, increasingly, abroad. The BAFTA weekend will showcase world-famous Bollywood stars who are coming to London especially for the event. Key figures confirmed to date include producer/director Yash Chopra, actor/producer Shah Rukh Khan, actor/producer Aamir Khan, filmmaker Karan Johar and actress Preity Zinta.
Friday’s Opening Night of the “BAFTA Goes Bollywood” weekend in association with Lloyds TSB International Private Banking begins with a reception in true Bollywood style, followed by an interview with actor/producer Shah Rukh Khan and a screening of his BAFTA-nominated film Devdas.
Saturday’s activities will kick-off with a screening of Kabhi Khushi Khabhie Gham (K3G), directed by Karan Johar, who will lead a masterclass on film direction.
Saturday night will showcase the work of legendary producer/director Yash Chopra, hosted by Sanjeev Bhaskar (The Kumars at No 42). The Academy will celebrate Mr Chopra’s films with clips and live tributes. There will also be a screening of his hugely popular release, Veer-Zaara, on the same evening.
Sunday opens with Dil Chahta Hai, featuring young actress Preity Zinta, who will take part in a Q & A session about her career success and future projects.
The Closing Night of “BAFTA Goes Bollywood” in association with Citibank NRI Business Global India will put the spotlight on Aamir Khan, star and producer of worldwide hit movie Lagaan. A screening of his recent film, Rang De Basanti, will be followed by an in-depth interview with Aamir himself. It will close with a reception also supported by Citibank.
Duncan Kenworthy, BAFTA Chairman, says: “The Academy is delighted to host this exciting event, which celebrates and investigates the broad appeal, outstanding creative talent and unparalleled production values that characterise Bollywood cinema. With a significant and growing impact on UK audiences, Bollywood films are increasingly popular around the world. We are honoured to bring some of Bollywood’s most influential artists to London, to recognise their achievements and to learn from their expertise.”
To complement the weekend’s events, BAFTA’s HQ will experience a Bollywood makeover, its David Lean Room transformed by the UK’s leading magazine for Asian Women: Asiana. British Asian singer Alyssia and Lakme cosmetics in the UK will add extra glamour and glitz to the occasion.
