WHAT BLACK WOMEN WANT
Soul Legend Glorious Jones has decided to end her career by performing for one last time at The Hackney Empire, the theatre that gave her that first ‘big break’ 12 years ago.
She is travel weary but glad to finally be back home in England. Glorious is looking forward to a new direction in her life. A quiet life in that small local church where everything begun for her.
Tickets are like gold dust. The audience is charged with excitement. Then Glorious begins to share….
What Black Women Want, is a beautifully written theatre piece which explores the lives of black British women.
Writer Yaw Asiyama brings his sensitive touch to this story of every woman. His collection of sympathetically told short stories take us on a journey through the emotions, very private lives and thoughts of twelve women.
The tapestry of their lives is held together by the eloquent soul music with That Peter Daley Sound and Sandra McCalla’s unique touch. It’s a ‘got to be there’ moment.
This one nighter London Premier at Hackney Empire will be a beautiful experience. In typical Asiyama fashion, the audience is asked to participate by making this a dress to impress session. Women are encouraged to arrive in “that iconic black dress”. This is reflected on stage by the beautiful black dresses the characters wear. (Camelle Daley, House of Ilona) The men asked to ‘dress sharp’. It’s all part of the fun.
