VITAL 06 Closes and looks forward to VITAL 07!

Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester received phenomenal audiences during a city wide Live Art Festival – VITAL 06 (2-5 November 2006). All 4 days were a sell out and extra tickets were issued due to demand. During the festival Manchester was treated to some extraordinary Live Art performances, film screenings and artists’ talks by 14 internationally renowned artists including He Yun Chang, He Chengyao and Dai Guang Yu, (China), Patty Chang, Marcus Young, Zheng Lianjie (USA), Leung Po-shan, Yuen Kin Leung, (Hong Kong), Ying Mei Duan, (Germany) Lee Wen (Singapore) and UK based artists Mad for Real, Edwin Lung, Lisa Cheung, Yadong Hao.

Sarah Champion, CEO of Chinese Arts Centre and Curator of the festival states; “Vital 06 was the first time that artists of Chinese descent had the opportunity to come together to share their experiences in Live Art. The artists selected all represented the very best in the world. Whilst some of the Live Art performances were shocking, most encouraged the audience to reflect on their own emotions or current political issues. As we anticipated there were a number of surprises, there were also some very beautiful and thought provoking performances such as Marcus Young’s slow walk of the city and Edwin Lung’s ‘Light by Light’ performance where the audience were asked to write their wish on a ping pong ball and drop it from a height to engage with the artist in dance. One of my personal highlights was a memorable and moving performance by He Chengyao who auctioned her hair (10 years worth, a symbolic cultural gesture to her parents and bloodline).

VITAL 06 is the start of a major programme of Live Art events by Chinese Arts Centre. The festival will be followed by a year of residencies by Chinese artists in collaboration with institutions across England. A second festival, VITAL 07 will take place in Manchester during October 07. VITAL 07 will also include an international conference as well as a programme of performances. The discussions, residencies and programmed artists will be celebrated in the VITAL publication due out in Spring 08.
