Verse&Verses – Robert Hylton’s Urban Classicism

Verse&Verses - Robert Hylton

Robert Hylton, with his signature blend of Hip-Hop and contemporary dance, joins forces with guest choreographer Pervez (Live to Break) and a fresh new line up for this arresting production, set to a ground-breaking score by DJ Billy Biznizz. Atmospherically charged, expectation builds towards a cinematic beginning as a DJ selects his latest hot tune. As the needle hits the groove, the audience gets set for a unique experience and vinyl literally explodes into life. The stage morphs into an energetic musical extravaganza as dancers get set to weave their grooves. As the soundtrack comes together from diverse musical styles, Verse&Verses illustrates the eternity of vinyl, reaffirming its limitless future and timeless past.

Setting the pace for Verse&Verses, a new work for five performers by hip hop maverick Robert Hylton, is DJ/Producer Billy Biznizz with his Hip Hop beats, hard rock guitar riffs, and vocal harmonies creating and mixing a live compositional ground breaking soundtrack with two turntables. This is a psychedelic celebration of musicality in a physical contract of music and movement through popping and contemporary dance. Visual installations by multi-media company AllofUS will interact with the performers to create an installation of three dimensional space, morphing the stage into a mass of visual and musical energy. The performers seek to reinvent their separate forms of music and movement whilst pushing boundaries and defining possibilities of hip hop based culture in this bold and visionary work.

Verse&Verses will be rich in imagery, choreography and music with the stage lighting blending with the performers in a way that is almost filmic. Visuals projected onto the backdrop will transform the stage space and play a key part in the choreographic design. Alongside all of the ingredients above, sound and costume design will parallel all the other elements as the work builds into a cascade of visuals with abstract images suspended in space, merging from one to the other, creating the illusion of many different textures.
