UK screening THE RELUCTANT REVOLUTIONARY + director ‘in conversation’ (London, 5th April)

On Thursday 5th April, we are showing the first UK cinema screening of the documentary, filmed in Yemen during the uprising, that astounded the Berlin Film Festival – and we’re thrilled to be joined by acclaimed filmmaker Sean McAllister as this special screening.

"A breathless pace, as ense of black humour and a great central character… one of the most immediate and accessible descriptions of the Arab Spring yet to emerge." Hollywood Reporter

As the revolution in Yemen becomes a violent struggle, tour guid Kais turns from government supporter to passionate protester.

Father-of-three Kais is annoyed by the protests in Yemen that are ruining his trade as a tour guide. Everything changes when he meets film-maker Sean McAllister who, unlike every other foreign journalist, has avoided being expelled. Kais begins his political journey from pro-president to reluctant revolutionary, ready to take to the streets against those in power, who are happy to kill their own people in a shocking massacre. Filmed over the past year, it’s an extraordinary tale of a revolution in the making, and embodies the struggle of ordinary Yemenis to determine their own future after 33 years of authoritarian rule.

Award-winning director Sean McAllister joins us after the screening for an extended discussion on the Reluctant Revolutionary and his filmmaking career, which has seen him working in the UK, Israel, Iraq, Japan, Yemen and, most recently, filming in Syria.
Documentary filmmaker Sean McAllister is celebrated as one of the UK’s most exciting talents. From his early films WORKING FOR THE ENEMY (1997) and MINDERS (1998), both nominated for Royal Television Society Awards, to his more recent successes, Sundance Jury Prize-winning LIBERACE OF BAGHDAD (2004) and JAPAN: A STORY OF LOVE AND HATE (2008), Sean’s work continues to inspire, to surprise and to fascinate audiences.
Sean’s films portray, with characteristic intimacy and frankness, people from different parts of the world who are struggling to survive but are survivors, caught up in political and personal conflict, trying to make sense of the world we live in.
"The great thing about Sean’s films is that he champions the characters in his documentaries, he always takes a loser and makes them a winner." – D A Pennebaker
