UK Centre for Carnival Arts host their first Brazilian Festival this summer

UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) in partnership with JP Courtney and Takepart Arts Ltd, are proud to host the first Luton International Encounter, featuring some of the world’s best Brazilian carnival music and dance.

“The UKCCA is proud to announce our first samba encounter taking place in Luton. UKCCA aims to make this an annual pilgrimage for Brazilian music lovers, artists and carnival bands and the event will become an important way we start to grow, strengthen and export this work to other carnivals taking place nationally” Paul Anderson MBE, Chief Executive of the UKCCA

Luton International Encounter 2011 will be launched on Friday 22nd July 2011 at the UKCCA based in Luton with a major conference discussing the role of Brazilian carnival within schools and communities. This will follow a Welcome Party with music by international musicians including Duo Carioca.

"I just cannot wait to have a chance to meet, learn and perform with people from all over the world. From Sweden to Swindon; from Rio to Rochdale; from Latvia to Luton, what unites us is a love of Brazilian carnival culture." Daniel Bernstein, Takepart Arts Ltd

Also coming to Luton will be Mestre Ailton Nunes from Mangueira, the oldest and most famous samba school in Rio. Mestre Ailton is one of the world’s leading "mestres" (Musical Conductor). A true master of the Bateria (the percussion section of a Samba School), Ailton not only plays every instrument to a very high standard, he is deeply knowledgeable in all aspects of Brazilian Carnival.

On Saturday 23rd July, there will be free performances taking place in Luton town centre (Market Hill and St. George’s Square) allowing the public to experience the energy and colour of Brazilian carnival on their door step. Meanwhile, workshops for artists led by national and international musicians, dancers and costume makers will be taking place at various venues across Luton including the UKCCA and these will continue into Sunday. In the evening, the Saturday Night Showcase will bring together the best carnival percussion groups in the land including Batebalengo, Maracatudo Mafua, Ziriguidum, Eri Okan and DJ Pax Nindi. This exciting showcase event is for all the public and will feature a night of big beats, dancing feet and caipirinha treats. Artists from Italy, UK, Africa and Brazil will perform some of the most amazing carnival music you will hear this summer. This is a night not to be missed!

“We can’t wait to play in Luton and give the UK a taste of Brazilian Carnival” Fabio Allman, Monobloco

Luton International Encounter 2011 will be taking place during the London 2012 Open Weekend, which marks the one year countdown to the London 2012 Games. This occasion will also mark this as an annual festival at the UKCCA so expect there to be a Luton International Encounter 2012.

Luton International Encounter 2011 is guaranteed to be one of the most exciting festivals taking place across the UK this summer and the public will have a unique opportunity to experience performances by some of the world’s best carnival artists.
