The Regent Street Festival 2006: A Walk Through Spain

On 3 September Regent Street will close to traffic for the Regent Street Festival whose theme this year is ‘A Walk Through Spain’ sponsored by the Spanish Tourist Office and the Regent Street Retailers. Fourteen of the regions from Spain will be participating in the event, showcasing the best the country has to offer.

Each of the fourteen Spanish regions are taking over a stretch of Regent Street, so festival-goers will be able to walk through Spain, experiencing the look and feel of each region.

Regent Street’s retailers are also taking part in the festival. In-store activity will include demonstrations, special offers, promotions, fashion shows and wine tasting and the best of Spanish foods. Spanish dancing and music will add to the shopping experience in Regent Street.

In the run-up to the event, Spanish Nights on Heddon Street; a series of three Spanish music and dance evenings in Heddon Street, Regent Street’s Food Quarter, where free Flamenco dance lessons will also take place on Thursday 17, 24 and 31 August to pre-promote the Regent Street Festival.

CONFIRMED ACTIVITY FROM THE REGIONS TO DATE

Andalusia – promises a traditional Flamenco Dance Show with a chance for visitors to learn from the experts. For the professionals there will be a nine hole putting green to reflect the eight provinces within Andalusía, the ninth representing Andalusía. And a taste of traditional Andalusía fair will make everyone’s mouth water. Wine from the province of Huelva can be tasted in some of the Regent Street stores.

Balearic Islands – A magnificent equestrian performance will bring to life the Fiesta de Sant Joan in Menorca, where eight of the beautiful, highly-trained Menorcan horses will be ridden by their owners in traditional island folk costume accompanied by a thirty piece brass band. To add to this there will be traditional music and dancing.

Canary Islands – An amazing carnival atmosphere from the islands will bring more entertainment to the Festival. The area will have sand sculptures, carnival queens, dancers and craftsmen including cigar rollers embroiderers. Free and refreshing freshly squeezed fruit juices – mangos, papayas, bananas, strawberries and more – will also be handed out.

Castile-Leon
Demonstrations of theatre, music, dance and local crafts will give the visitor an insight into this charming area. Castile-Leon prides itself on activity/adventure holidays and this will be reflected in its activity planned for the day.

Catalonia
And from the East of Spain, Catalonia will stage the famous Castellers – a human tower. Four shows are scheduled throughout the day with the most spectacular at 2pm – an event not to be missed. As well as this they will have an outsize living art wall, with six painters creating a Dalí-esque style painting during the day and be handing out 3000 red roses with bookmarkers celebrating the Catalan tradition of men being given books and women red roses during the celebration of their Patron Saint Sant Jordi.

Green Spain – represents four regions, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country all of whom will be showing the crafts from each, with demonstrations and examples of their wonderful workmanship.

La Rioja – This famous region will be entertaining everyone with a traditional craft exhibition that will include barrel and wine skin makers. Regional dancers and musicians from Rioja will put everyone in the Festival mood. In-store wine tasting will give shoppers the opportunity to sample a true taste of La Rioja.

Madrid – Madrid is joining forces with Habitat to recreate the city’s beautiful Plaza Mayor, the statues will be live versions and there will be silent mimes, portrait artists and a chorizo barbecue.

Murcia – The region will be a Mecca for all children as there will be a number of workshops where younger festival-goers can learn anything from windsurfing to paper flower making, together with a sandcastle competition. Cultural and regional dancing will make this area from the South Eastern coastal region of Spain entertaining and, as Murcia is one of Spain’s top water sport areas, there will be a variety of nautical and water sport displays during the day.

Navarre – Take a tour on a magic carpet over hills, through valleys, under water and in the air over the stunning scenery of the Navarre. Free giveaways, tastings, and other exciting activities will make this area a must visit.

Valencia – Regent Street’s first ever beach will be from Valencia and Benidorm, bringing the true Spanish holiday atmosphere to the Festival. Parasols and sun loungers together with the opportunity to enjoy tasting Valencia’s famous Paella will give people the chance to experience one of the wonderful holiday destinations of Spain. Throughout the day there will be an opportunity to win four holidays to Benidorm

The Spanish Tourist Office – Visit for face painting, free helium balloons and information on what’s new, where to go and what to see throughout Spain.
