The OakMobile, home to the Story Collector, is a mini theatrical experience which encourages people in Birmingham to celebrate their favourite places.
Members of the public were entertained by an enchanting storyteller whilst they waited in line for their turn to venture into the magical OakMobile. Once inside, visitors were greeted by the Story Collector who asked them to share a tale about their favourite place. On exit, each group was then given a Magic Ticket, allowing them free entry to a specially selected National Trust property in the Midlands.
The OakMobile will now tour around some of Birmingham’s parks over the summer and autumn.
“When I stepped into the OakMobile I became 7½ years old” said one member of the public who is really 53.
"Well done NT OakMobile and thank you for such a friendly and cheerful launch event. You smiled through the gales and rain and made me feel very welcome and valued.” said another member of the public at the launch.
The OakMobile is a visual feast for the eyes with its metallic shell inspired by some of the landmark buildings in Birmingham and local National Trust properties. In contrast, the inside is a night garden complete with trees and grass.
Beccy Speight, Regional Director for the National Trust in the Midlands, said: “We want to get people excited, not only about the National Trust’s places in and around Birmingham, but also about the places they love, whether that’s their own back garden or somewhere on the other side of the world. These places matter and are so important to people’s physical and mental well being – providing space to exercise, explore, relax, dream, refresh and above all enjoy ourselves. We need to value them!”
On tour the OakMobile will be accompanied by free children’s activities including trails, games and crafts which will make each stop a fantastic day out for the whole family.
The OakMobile experience was designed by Coventry-based theatre company, Talking Birds.
