The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham is preparing to play host to the breath-taking Indian stage musical The Merchants of Bollywood. The history of the world’s largest film industry ‘Bollywood’ will be portrayed with all its colour, glitter, and romanticism in this theatrical play.
Written and directed by Toby Gough, featuring music by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and choreographed by leading film choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant. The musical follows the story of Ayesha Merchant, her grandfather Shantilal, and the inevitable clash of generations and ambition.
A fictional story, inspired by real life, The Merchants of Bollywood will reveal to audiences, the workings of cinema and the part it plays in the heart and soul of Indian society in a spectacular evening of music and dance
The musical is about the show’s choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant, and is woven into a story of dreams and sacrifices, family rebellion and romance. Set to some of the most memorable music and songs from Bollywood films, The Merchants of Bollywood has already been hailed as a spectacular success by audiences and critics in Australia.
Vaibhavi Merchant is an award-winning choreographer within the Indian film industry and commands huge respect and admiration from Bollywood’s A-list stars. Having choreographed such huge Box Office smashes as Lagaan, Devdas, Rang de Basanti, Dhoom, Fanaa and Krissh she is also currently working on the long awaited remake of the classic Umrao Jaan, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwariya Rai.
Amidst the elaborate costumes and majestic sets of this production, a vibrant celebration of the culture of Indian society will be shared with UK audiences. The Merchants of Bollywood will feature great moments of Bollywood live on stage, capturing the colourful rich essence of India.
Hot off its success in Australia and Zurich the show will be touring the UK this Winter, premiering in Birmingham on 24th October as the first stop of the UK tour.
