Does Photography can enhance our perception of reality?

Traditionally, it is understood that we read photographs as we read the world around us, a world that is full of uses, values and meanings. Yet, how much one perceives depends not only on what the senses can detect, but also on what one recognizes, understands and imagines.

For Patrycja Basinska, photography does not always need to tell a story or relate directly to a particular subject.

With her unique photographic practice, she cunningly leads the viewer away from tradition into unchartered territory. Her work undermines the very foundation on how we read, understand meaning and narrative of the photographic image.

Using the photographic process as a tool, she deliberately creates images that are blurred, damaged, over or underexposed. By doing so, the artist attempts to force the viewer to re-evaluate, and thus alter their perception; challenging pre-assumed ideas of how the photographic image ought to be perceived, comprehended and interpreted as well as reality itself.
