Stand up for a good cause

Following last year’s sell-out show, Harrow-based charity, One Cause, will be hosting another evening to showcase the cream of UK comedy with the return of the ‘Gigglathon’. The event, on Saturday 27 March at Harrow Arts Centre, is sure to be a hit with acts from four of the UK’s best stand-up comedians. Headliner, Paul Zerdin, who performed for the Queen at the Royal Variety show 2009, will be joined by Prince Abdi, Edinburgh Fringe Festival award-winner; Hyde Panaser, described by Time Out as one of Britain’s brightest new talents; and Jay Sodagar, TV and comedy circuit regular, to guarantee a night of belly laughs.

One Cause is a local charity – the core team are all based around Harrow – and is committed to raising awareness and funds for those people that that have little or no access to education. The charity’s philosophy is simple: education is the answer to poverty and one route out of poverty. One of the charity’s first initiatives was with the Nirvana School in India where it raised funds to make some amazing changes to the lives of people in the local community. For example, since the project started in 2008, One Cause has provided English language training to all Nirvana teachers; invested in a water filtration plant to provide drinking water for the school; financed evening adult skill courses (tailoring, computing, typewriting, etc) for ex-Nirvana students and adults in the local community; as well as invested in computers and books for the school.
A fantastic achievement has also been the charity’s ‘Sponsor a Child’ Program, which assists Nirvana students to get sponsorship from donors to help fund their education. One Cause wants to build on its success by increasing the 37 One Cause student sponsorships already in place to 80 by Dec 2010. The charity is also starting a new programme of initiatives with a technical school in Uganda.

For the One Cause team, getting people involved and excited about the worthwhile causes they support is vital to achieving the charity’s goals. They know it’s not always easy for people to take time out of today’s busy lifestyles to help charitable causes but every gesture and donation goes a long way. The success of previous One Cause events is testament to this. Last year, in addition to its annual comedy night and business to business seminar, the charity organised The Lake District Six Peaks challenge where 10 volunteers raised over £4,000 by climbing over 1750m and four runners joined the One Cause team to run the London marathon raising over a whopping £8,200.

The ‘Gigglathon’ on Saturday 27 March is sure to be another One Cause event dedicated to having fun, meeting new people and raising money for a worthwhile cause.
