South African Dance at Sadler’s Wells

South African Dance at Sadler

“On stage he tends to move like a praying mantis who’s been to ballet class. Off stage he continues to be an original post-modern African Renaissance man.” IOL

South African choreographer and dancer Gregory Maqoma, one of the most talented of the new generation of South African artists, returns to Sadler’s Wells’ Lilian Baylis Theatre on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 June 2007 with his new solo work, accompanied by four exceptional South African musicians.

Beautiful Me is a work created by the electrifying Maqoma in collaboration with choreographers who inspire him, including Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Akram Khan, Faustin Linyekula and Vincent Mantsoe. Beautiful Me is a hypnotic fusion of movement, music and text, drawing diverse elements of humour, history and protest from the choreographic material.

Maqoma has been variously described as a ‘visionary’, ‘the gentle enfant terrible of South African Dance’ and ‘an original post-modern African Renaissance man’.
