Pop singer and Broadcaster join forces in new play about fame and fans

Broadcaster and writer-performer Yasmeen Khan and lead singer of pop band The Hoosiers, Irwin Sparkes, have co-written a play, ‘Don’t You Know Who I Am?’, about fame and superfans. They will be performing the comedy-drama at Tara Arts, Jan 31st-Feb 2nd (previews) and The Pleasance, Islington, Feb 13th-17th.

‘Don’t You Know Who I Am?’ is the satirical tale of pop singer Zack and his superfan Cassie, each on their own desperate quest for validation and whose lives will never be the same once Cassie takes her idol’s career into her own hands. Pop star Zack used to be in a successful boyband. He had screaming girls, sell-out tours and a luxury lifestyle. He was living the dream. But years later all he’s got left is his failing new solo single and his ever-dedicated superfan Cassie – a shy grown-up desperately clinging on to her identity as a fan, because that’s all she’s got. When Zack and Cassie’s world’s collide, our fixation with fame, the power of the media and just what it means to be a fan are all called into question.

The play is written and performed by a journalist/broadcaster and musician/singer, both of whom are also writer-performers.

Yasmeen Khan is a freelance broadcaster and writer who presents documentaries for Radio 4 and is currently under commission to write two new plays. As one half of comedy sketch duo Asian Provocateurs, Yasmeen was listed by the Sunday Times as one of the top female acts to see at Edinburgh. With The Hoosiers, Irwin Sparkes chalked up a number one album with debut release ‘The Trick to Life’ and followed it up with top ten album ‘The Illusion of Safety’ . He is currently returning to his acting roots and also making new music with The Hoosiers and a number of other projects. This unique new collaboration draws on their collective experiences of working in the media and music industries to pose the question: in the fame game who really has the power: the star or the fans?

‘Don’t You Know Who I Am?’ is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
