Palestinian Dance Troupe in Leicester

From Friday, 29 June to Friday, 6 July, sixteen Palestinian children and three adults from the Hakaya Dance Troupe will be staying in Leicester. The Dance Troupe from the Ghirass Children’s Cultural Centre in Bethlehem, are here to perform Dabka, a traditional Palestinian dance. The visit is being organised by the charity Bethlehem Link and partly sponsored by Interpal, the Palestinians Relief and Development Fund.

The children will be guests of St. Paul’s Catholic and English Martyrs high schools and Medway Primary. They will be participating in dance workshops at the high schools.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, 3 July, they will perform for Leicester primary schools in the Fraser Noble Hall, 2 University Road, University of Leicester. Participating primary schools will also perform South Asian and Irish dancing. This will then be followed by a public performance from 7:15pm.

The Hakaya Troupe provides a unique opportunity to experience Palestinian culture, and to understand the lives, joys and sorrows of children who were born under, and continue to live under military occupation. Their performance displays resilience, creativity, energy, and an irrepressible hope for a better future.

The Ghirass Children’s Cultural Centre Bethlehem provides activities six days a week for the children of Bethlehem and the surrounding villages and refugee camps.
