Nina & Shaz @ The Drill Hall

Nina & Shaz @ The Drill Hall

“What if Martin Luther King didn’t have a dream, huh?
Would y’all be dreaming your big dreams?”

After its sell-out run at The Brockley Jack Theatre in 2009, Nina & Shaz returns with a brand new cast from Waiting in the Dark Theatre Company. Written and directed by Laura McCluskey (Assistant Director: Gone Too Far at the Royal Court and Been So Long at the Young Vic), the play intertwines the lives of music legend Nina Simone and young, contemporary singer Shazne as they battle against violence, poverty and prejudice in order to achieve their dreams.

Inspired by Nina Simone’s extraordinary life, McCluskey’s script parallels the discrimination Simone suffered with Shaz’s attempts to move away from the gang culture that surrounds her. Through their passion for their music both women find the confidence to speak out and succeed, despite all obstacles.

The two stories are presented with a rich backdrop of new arrangements of Simone classics, contemporary club tunes and a specially composed song for Shaz.
