The National Trust has commissioned one of the UK’s leading site-specific theatre companies, Talking Birds, to build the OakMobile, a wonderful family friendly experience featuring an amazing transportable home with a magical character living inside. The OakMobile will travel across Birmingham meeting with different communities asking them to share their stories about places that are special to them. These can be based on a childhood memory, a family holiday, where a romance blossomed, a far away homeland or a local park where the community gets together.
This will also be a unique opportunity for the National Trust to speak with people in the city about some of the special places it looks after in and around Birmingham.
Laura Broadhurst, Project Manager for the OakMobile, says: “Birmingham is one of the biggest cities in the UK, but knowledge of the National Trust and all the amazing places we look after near by is relatively low amongst many of the people who live there. We love sharing the enthusiasm we have for our places with people, so we’ve decided to bring a flavour of the National Trust to the communities in Birmingham where we know engagement is low.
“We don’t want to give the game away, but you can expect a truly wonderful experience as you step into a unique little world to celebrate the place that’s most special to you – whether that’s a grand, National Trust owned country house or your own back garden.”
The OakMobile will officially launch to the world on Saturday 22 June 2013 in Victoria Square (Birmingham city centre) at 11.00am. This special occasion will be celebrated with the fan fare of circus theatrics and family friendly activities. The launch will follow a tour of parks in Birmingham between July – November 2013. The full tour details will be announced at the launch.
