The search for individuality…the demands of tradition…the needs of a lover … are all encapsulated in ‘Life After Life’ (35 minutes) and ‘The Heart of Him’ (30 minutes); charting an emotional journey from East to West, from the dreams of childhood to the passions of youth.
‘Life After Life’ takes the audience on the Hero’s journey from birth, through the playful innocence of childhood, the arrogance of youth – along the struggling passageways into adult life. Balancing the quest for individuality with the demands of tradition.
‘The Heart of Him’ depicts the Hero through the eyes of his lover. A very personal hero, the hero of one woman’s life-story, in which she poses the question, ‘…does she believe in him because she loves him’, or ‘…does she love him because she believes in him?’
Appetite’s Artistic Director and Choreographer Apple Yang has a vision to explore dance and movement as a trans-global language. In pursuit of this, she creates powerful, physical narratives with engaging and enthralling dimensions that portray ways of life that underpin human societies across the world.
Yang is living a chapter in her life that upon reflection enriches the content and direction of her choreography. The physical and spiritual nature of the experiences including her marriage, the birth of her first child (daughter, Isabel) and the imminent arrival of her second baby – create an ideal platform for her creativity.
Yang (28) first moved to Newcastle upon Tyne from Beijing, a decade ago – to study performing arts and, to seek the opportunity to develop her own unique dancing style.
“When a choreographer transforms their vision into movement, it is a very emotional and personal experience. The work of Appetite Dance Productions is strongly influenced by my heritage, beliefs, locality and family life, which is evident in my East meets West approach to narrative,” said Apple Yang.
