Mayor of London welcomes the Notting Hill Carnival 2006

The Mayor of London is a proud supporter of the Notting Hill Carnival, which is one of the key highlights in London’s events calendar, for both Londoners and visitors alike.

Welcoming the 2006 Carnival, Mayor Ken Livingstone said:

“Carnival is one of London’s cultural highlights, a weekend of celebrations that is eagerly anticipated by Londoners and visitors to the capital.

‘London has a thriving Caribbean population and carnival is a unique opportunity to sample the sounds, tastes, fashion, floats, dance, and creativity from the 19 islands in the Caribbean.

‘Complimenting the main carnival, on Bank Holiday Monday there will be the Caribbean Showcase in Hyde Park. It will be a great place to stop off before going to Notting Hill and enjoying the breathtaking floats, carnival processions and sounds. The showcases is particularly aimed at families and will include an education zone, a music stage, food stalls and children’s fun fair.

‘I am working to make London a city that is a truly inclusive and an equal home for everyone from every community. Carnival unites Londoners and brings people together from all backgrounds.

‘I remain committed to the Carnival’s continued success as a safe and enjoyable event and, as in previous years, my office will be supporting the stewarding operation.

“I encourage everyone to attend what promises to be an unmissable weekend of celebrations.”
