lewisham people’s day – global vibe with local roots

lewisham people

Lewisham People’s Day is no ordinary festival. It’s a soul soaring, body popping, knuckle curling, circus flying, belly dancing extravaganza for all the family! Where else can you find a Motown musical extravaganza, reggae, ska acts and fabulous street dance from acts like Tipper Dancers and Rough Dymondz in the same line up as the fabulous Congolese Zong Zing All Stars, spoken word artists like Ty and a full on water themed Carnival – phew! Head up to Mountsfield Park and enjoy seven action packed hours of music, dance, film, sport and family fun taking place over 10 brilliant stages!

Highlights will include a stage which crosses continents, representing traditional/indigenous music from the myriad of diasporas present in Lewisham: English, Irish, America, Balkan and African….These acts are supported by the Art’s Council via the Global Local scheme – dedicated to funding up and coming London acts to play on stages at London community events.

Kids will be treated to a whole host of fun packed music, theatre and sports activities including: the Kids Big Top: a magical experience at Fred’s Idiosyncratic Flying Circus where kids will witness daring circus acts including tight-rope, trapeze and knicker juggling! The fabulous water themed carnival ‘Splash’ will also be a ‘must see’! The Carnival procession will wind its way around Mountsfield Park at 4.00pm with an opportunity to take part in the fun with arts and crafts workshops throughout the afternoon. The procession will end with an out of this world grand finale featuring a giant fiery Phoenix bird, dolphin mascots and the unveiling of a gigantic fountain of wishes! Sports and dance taster sessions including: Zumba, ula Hoop and Boxercise will also be the order of the day at the Move n’ Groove arena.

An expected 30,000 festival goers will be treated to an eclectic mixture of community and professional performers. One of the event’s strengths has been the sense of ownership by the borough’s diverse communities and People’s Day remains rooted locally giving Lewisham’s own performers the chance to appear on a bill with national and international acts. Whether you’re here for a relaxed picnic in the park experience, a bite sized international festival or a full-on dance extravaganza we guarantee a good day out will be had by all.
