MEMODROME: INCUBATOR – ROMANIAN MEMORIES OF EXILE
We are happy to invite you to the launch of Open Arena – a creative initiative aiming at exploring contemporary life of the Romanian Diaspora living in London. The event will feature the experimental immersive theatre performance Memodrome: Incubator as well as a talk on memory and testimony with Dr Ananda Breed, Senior Lecturer & Programme Leader at School of Arts & Digital Industries, University of East London. The launch will be followed by a reception held at RCC.
Through Memodrome: Incubator the audience will get immersed into a situational experience, which will enable them to creatively explore memories of pre-1989 Romania. This interactive theatre event – the first one from the Open Arena series – will emphasise the story of Romanian artist Mariana Gordan and her dramatic encounter with the Securitatea in 1979 Ceausescu’s Romania. She will tell the audience about her narrow escape from a sentence to 30 years in a Communist prison and also about her experience of exile in Britain. The audience will have the chance to respond to Mariana’s story and to share personal memories.
Memodrome: Incubator is a live interactive theatre experience allowing members of the audience to immerse into different situational adventures and to be exposed to various memory stimuli. During the performance, participants are invited to share narratives from their past experience based on those stimuli and a performer/medium will facilitate the unfolding of the story by orchestrating the development of the narrative. In other words, Memodrome: Incubator is an emotional carousel experience designed by Immersive Theatre and co-created by the audience.
