Kathakbox - A Visual Heart Pounding Spoken Word Dance Production - UK and International Tour 2011‏

Kathakbox is an innovative new stage production from one of the UK’s most exciting and dynamic dance companies. Sonia Sabri Company bring together the Indian classical dance form, Kathak and the universal culture of Hip Hop to celebrate the unique, diverse energy of modern Britain through Urban Kathak.

Kathakbox creates conversations between the grace and vigour of Kathak and the complex, rhythms and rhymes of Hip Hop culture. These apparently different art forms are often thought of within separate ‘boxes’ for different audiences and cultures, but what lies ‘outside the box’? Drawing on urban trends and global roots, a company of technically diverse, brilliant dancers and musicians find out, breaking into a new creative arena never experienced before. They create Urban Kathak through collaboration between street, contemporary and Indian dance, beatboxing, spoken word and tabla vox rhythms. Kathakbox encourages us to ‘think outside the box’ and reflects the diverse, intersecting rhythms of the human experience.

Award-winning dancer and choreographer, Sonia Sabri has established herself as a British Asian artist who is interested in the rich possibilities that arise when bringing together different cultures. She also works with Kathak, not as a traditional art form but as a language to create new and relevant conversations between different art forms and Kathakbox takes these conversations to the next level. Although seen as a ‘classical’ style, Kathak contains many dynamic, on-trend ingredients such as ‘beatboxed’ tabla rhythms and Kathak rap (known as kavitt), which connect with the Hip Hop attitude.

Kathakbox’s artistic journey began at Choreodrome, a scheme run by one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance venues, The Place, with mentoring support from esteemed choreographer Richard Alston. Sonia Sabri Company also received a special invitation to perform an early extract of Kathakbox at The Place’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Kathakbox has since developed into a visual heart pounding spoken word dance production, which explores chaos within order. Just when you think you know what is going on – the extreme opposite happens.

The much anticipated 2011 tour of Kathakbox has been co-produced by one of the Midlands most popular arts centres, mac, where Sonia Sabri is an Associate Artist. Kathakbox will have its’ national premiere at the mac followed by the international premiere at the World Stage Festival in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the British Council and Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage. The international premiere is a part of strategic cultural exchange initiative led by Birmingham City Council, through which Sonia Sabri Company will represent the arts and cultures of Birmingham and the UK on a world stage amongst artists and dignitaries from across the globe.

The UK tour will allow audiences to experience the power and excitement of Kathakbox on their doorstep as it performs at over 20 venues across the nation. Featuring Sonia Sabri performing alongside three dancers including b-boy Nathan Geering, internationally recognised tabla maestro Sarvar Sabri, acclaimed spoken word artist & vocalist Marcina Arnold and beatboxer Shan Bansil, Kathakbox is going to be one of the must-see new creative highlights of 2011.
