I am Anansi, the cheeky little spider-man. They say I’m guilty of sneaky tricks and scams.
But I’m just guilty of ducking and diving. Surviving the best way I can…

Kat and Tameka Empson return to the Hackney Empire following their appearances in Mother Goose. Kat is to play the role he was born for – ANANSI, the mischievous spider-man from African and Carribbean folklore! Tameka Empson will bring her own theatrical wizardry to the role of NANA SUSU, owner of a magic store and the narrator of this brand new Anansi story.

Monkeys, hood rats, two fearsome jungle cats and Anansi the spider are brought to life through storytelling, dance, music, song and a lot of laughter. When Anansi enters the world of Nana Susu’s Magic Shop and steals the Magic Mirror from under the nose of the young girl Adjoah, he unleashes the power of Lilith from the underworld and causes a whole lot of bother. Can he return everything to rights or has he bitten off more than he can chew? Only Nana Susu knows for sure!

ANANSI AND THE MAGIC MIRROR follows Talawa’s first Anansi adventure, Anansi Trades Places. There is a long tradition of oral storytelling in Africa. Anansi stories have survived their origins in Ghana, crossing the Atlantic to the West Indies during the
slave trade, and to the UK with immigrants from the New World. Talawa is
proud to continue this tradition here in London. Director Paul J. Medford
(fresh from America’s Next Top Model) and musical director Delroy Murray
return to lead the creative team. Writer Geoff Aymer was also part of
Talawa’s first Anansi adventure – he played the title role!

National Storytelling Week 31 January – 7 February: This week as part of the
season of ANANSI AND THE MAGIC MIRROR, Talawa Theatre Company and
the Hackney Empire will be celebrating the art of storytelling, with a series of
guerrilla storytelling events with leading storyteller Alastair Bain across Hackney – in
schools, community organisations, independent bookshops and markets.

Talawa Theatre Company is Britain’s foremost Black British theatre company. Talawa alumni include some of the country’s leading performers and playwrights. Talawa continues to develop talent through the Talawa Writers Group and Talawa Young People’s Theatre (TYPT). ANANSI AND THE MAGIC MIRROR follows Talawa’s sold-out Autumn season of playreadings at the Young Vic, Manz Like Me, a showcase of the best new Black British writing exploring the soul of the modern Black man.
