Journey To The World of Masks

Journey To The World of Masks

The UK’s first ever International Mask Festival is pleased to welcome Asian Mask Master Mas Soegeng in his brilliant performance ‘Journey to the World of Masks’; which sees the maestro take on a whole myriad of colourful characters single-handedly in this funny and ingenious one-man show. Showing for one night only, this is an unmissable performance from one of the world’s greatest mask performers, who has wowed audiences across the globe with his signature athletic style and eclectic creativity. This production is suitable for all the family, and children will particularly enjoy Soegeng’s acrobatics and entertaining characters.

Soegeng’s unique productions display his multi-cultural background; from the Ketropak and Wayang Wong puppet theatres of his childhood in Java, through his mastery of Balinese Topeng mask theatre to European influences from his now-native France. The international master reveals the scope of his creative flair in this mythical Eastern tale of kings, gods, Good, Evil and comical caricatures. The story takes place in the court of the king, who has assembled his subjects and advisors in an open invitation, in order to win approval from the gods over his rule of the kingdom. The ceremony is soon thronged with lively and hilarious characters, from grumpy deaf flautist Wayan Dungu to loud-mouthed, forest-dwelling Boubou. As things start to go downhill, opinions are announced, questions are fired and tempers raised until Good and Evil finally arrive to silence the lot.

Soegeng will also be sharing his artistry with visitors to the festival in a three-hour mask-using workshop where participants will have the opportunity to work with a range of masks used in the famous Topeng dance of Bali, held shortly before the performance on the Glasshouse site.
